The Preliminary, Preliminary Visual Arts Course
2010, Term 4, Weeks 6-10

Equipment and materials
- Visual Arts Process Diary – Hard cover A4 (black cover)
- Art History & Criticism folder (Arch-leaver or pocket manila folder)
- Drawing materials: Common pencils
- (Optional) Digital Camera (of any quality, even a phone camera)

Process Diary
Some rules:
- Please date all your work (top right hand corner)
- Use freely, expressively and creatively - don’t be too precious. Drop it on the ground and jump on it a few times so it doesn’t look so new!
- It should contain all your thoughts, feelings, ideas, designs, plans, and experiments for your ‘Body of Work’
- It should tell the story and show your journey in Art.
- When you include an image, you must explain it , why is it there? (eg. Experimenting with pencil)
- Do not use for Art History & Criticism, as this gets handed in separately.

Opening Page of your Process Diary
Please write the following quotation,

“Art is when a Human
tells another human
what it is to be human”
Adrian Elmer

This is my favourite saying about Art. It best expresses what I see as the purpose of art, what it’s all about, why I’m an artist and why I like looking at art. Firstly, art is about telling somebody something; it’s about communication, community, sharing and giving. Secondly, art is about being alive, the experience we share with all other people; like birth, love, hope, joy, sorry, illness, and death. Thirdly, art is about your own unique perspectives and experiences of life; nobody has experienced life as you, you are unique and have valuable things to share.

On this same page, write out what you think art is.
You can include your thoughts about all the Arts; music, drama, architecture, film, comics, etc
What is Art?
Can you give some actual examples of what is art for you?
What about, what is NOT art?
Decorate and make this page look fantastic!

Christmas Holiday Work

On the Next Series of Double Page Spreads

“Exploring my Worlds”

Create a series of images, write words, paste in clippings, take a series of photographs, or bits n’ pieces which explores you and your world. The physical world you live in plus the spiritual, imaginative and intellectual world of your mind. Use the mass media: newspapers, magazines, printouts (internet). Also, use the images which you see everyday: paintings at home, family photographs, calendars, screen savers etc

My EXTERNAL world
-       Where you live, what you do each day, where you go, what you see, the mundane things; your tooth paste, cereal, music, your room, your home, school, transport, shoes etc.
-       The people in your life; family, friends, the people in your community.

My INTERNAL world
-       Your joys, fears, hopes, likes, dislikes, dreams, nightmares
-       Your ideas about the future
-       What you imagine or dream about.
-       Profound thoughts, philosophies, poetry.
-       Favourite song lyrics.
-       Your faith, beliefs or questions and doubts about spirituality.

‘Body of Work’ Ideas

Ideas may come to you, so write them down.
If you see any images or artworks which are inspirational or similar to what you would like to do paste them in.

Art History & Criticism
It is important to have a good understanding of the changes and developments of Art history. We will do a great deal more of this next year, so to start with, I would like create your own timeline of Art History. This will be kept in your Art History folder and will be added to throughout 2009.  There were so many art periods, groups and styles, so I would like you to focus on the following areas:
- Classical & the Middle Ages (300BC-467AD - 1400)
- Renaissance to WWI (1400 - 1914)
- 20th Century  (1917 - 2000)

Some areas are quite complex, like the 20th Century, so just get down what you see as the most important artworks, we will have time to add, alter and work more on this later.
You will need the library or the internet. You want to find the key artworks and artists of each period.  The Metropolitan Museum in New York has an interactive timeline on their web site, which may help

Next to each of the artwork, place key information, as shown below.
